Past and Present of Lindus Dry Cleaners

Mr Serge Pelleri established the Lindus dry cleaning company in 1963 and the business is presently owned by the family trust.

Recognising the need for reliable in-house equipment, and after using (and modifying) locally manufactured equipment, Serge commenced importing quality dry cleaning equipment, which enabled the chain to grow quickly in the outer Sydney suburbs.

Serge's strategy was originally to site outlets in quality shopping strips, i.e. on main suburban roads, and grew the business from a zero base. As his reputation grew in the industry, his skills in setting up and managing operations and the provision of advice were recognised. Growing sales of new and reconditioned equipment and setting up dry cleaning establishments became a profit centre in itself.

The number of outlets fluctuated from eight to fifteen retail sites over the next decade as Serge bought and occasionally sold sites and operations. 25 years ago, his son Peter joined Serge in the business. Peter proved to be highly motivated and formed an effective management team, training and managing all staff and becoming involved in all aspects of the business, especially in setting up and developing outlets as key retail sites became available in the northern suburbs.

Whilst Serge now leaves the day-to-day management to Peter, he is still available as the chairman of the holding company.

In 1994 the management had determined that a clear strategy was in place, which would enable them to expand. This strategy is:

• Key sites in high volume shopping centres, complemented by small but high net worth suburban locations;
• Every plant being operational, providing on-site, same day 2-hour express dry cleaning;
• Highly trained and motivated owners providing awesome service.
